How do stamps help the welfare of dogs and cats? With the help of a PTS Member of course!
PTS Member, Andy Bowden of Sedbergh Stamps sent us this heartwarming story and we had to share it with you. Stamps make a difference to us each and every day, and when we look beyond our own collections and businesses, philatelic has so much power to change lives.
Animal Rescue Cumbria (The Wainwright Shelter) are based at Grayrigg, near Kendal, England. They were established in the 1970’s along with the help of Alfred and Betty Wainwright. Some 50 years later, the Charity helps to rehome and rehabilitate some 350-400 cats and dogs a year and helps improve their lives and find them their forever homes. The difference is not just for the animals, the love spreads into homes, families, and people’s lives all around the UK.
As a charity, Animal Rescue Cumbria receives no government funding and solely relies on the generosity of the community to help and support them.
Andy Bowden is a specialist valuer for stamps and postcards at a local auction house, where he catalogues several stamp auctions a year. Andy has been recently been blessed by two very generous vendors, who donated their material for auction to raise funds for Animal Rescue Cumbria. The auction consisted of 50 lots largely of GB and European material. 1818 Auctioneers waived all their selling fees to help the Charity. The Auction finished last Sunday evening (12th July) and raised over £4,800 on hammer prices. Andy shared the news with the charity the next day;
“It was incredible, and the charity were left speechless when i spoke to them!”
So, what will happen with the funds raised? Late last year, Animal Rescue Cumbria purchased a new site at Heversham, near Milnthorpe, England. Funds raised from the auction will go towards the redevelopment of the site to implement new kennels and a cattery to the latest welfare standards, in addition to an education and training centre to support their work in promoting animal welfare. We hope the story of how stamps helped make this happen will continue for a long time yet.
Andy told us: “Personally as a dog lover it is a wonderful feeling having a four legged family member looking at you with two big eyes. As a stamp specialist, stamps really can do good!”
